Our Story
Turn on the news and Somalia is a headline about crisis. Wallahi, that's not the whole story — and it's not even the most important part of it. Before the world decided what Somalia's story would be, Somalia was already writing it: as a nation that showed up for its neighbors, stood for independence movements across the continent, and helped shape what Pan-Africanism actually looks like in practice.
On May 25, 1963, Somalia stood among the founding members that signed the charter of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa — the beginning of the modern push for a united, self-determined Africa. A decade later, Somalia hosted the OAU's 11th Summit in Mogadishu in 1974 — a nation trusted to convene the continent.

In 1971, Somalia stepped in to broker a ceasefire between Uganda and Tanzania, helping prevent a war between the two nations — one of the clearest examples of Somali diplomacy protecting African peace, not just its own. The AMISOM 50th Anniversary Magazine calls Somalia "a premier example of what the ideals of Pan-Africanism can achieve put into practice."

Somalia opened its doors to African independence movements when few nations would. It hosted the Eritrean Liberation Front's first office in 1961, issued diplomatic passports to Eritrean activists — including a young Isaias Afwerki, who would later become Eritrea's president — and opened a training camp near Warsheekh in the mid-1970s to support the cause. Somalia also stood behind liberation struggles in Mozambique, Angola, and South Africa, and opened scholarships to students from across Africa, including Kenya, through the 1960s–80s.

Pan-African solidarity moved in both directions. Since 2007, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) — the AU's largest, longest-running, and most costly peacekeeping mission — has stood alongside Somalia, a reminder that the same spirit of unity Somalia once extended to others has been extended back to Somalia in turn.

Who We Really Are
Strip away the headlines and what's left is simple: Somalis are entrepreneurs — running remittance networks, import-export businesses, and mobile money systems long before "fintech" was a word. Somalis are caregivers — raising close-knit, multigenerational families wherever they land. Somalis are scholars, hafiz, engineers, nurses, and coders. We are not the story that gets told about us. We are the story we're telling now.

July 1, 1960 — the day British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland united into one independent Somalia — wasn't just Somalia's independence day. It was proof of what unity can build. Wallahi, we're not done building.
